We are glad to announce that Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda Educational and Research Institute (RKMVERI) will be conducting a special colloquium on “A PARADIGM SHIFT IN AGRICULTURE: AN EXPERIENCE OF SRI, A FARMER’S TECHNOLOGY” on 17 April 2026, 12 Noon at Seminar Hall, Narendrapur Campus.
Speaker : Prof. Pabitra Banik, RKMVERI
Co-ordinator: Prof. Abhijit Chakrabarti
Abstract
Rice (Oryza sativa L.) serves as the staple food for more than 50% of the global population and accounts for a major share of freshwater consumption in agriculture. It is estimated that over 85% of the total freshwater withdrawn for irrigation in many rice-growing regions is utilized for paddy cultivation. However, the growth rate of global rice production has shown a declining trend since 1984, raising serious concerns regarding future food security under conditions of increasing water scarcity and climate variability. The System of Rice Intensification (SRI) has emerged as a promising agroecological approach that enhances rice productivity while reducing water requirements and external inputs. SRI involves a set of improved crop and soil management practices, including the transplantation of young seedlings, wider spacing, intermittent irrigation, and enhanced soil aeration, which together promote better root development and microbial activity. The methodology was initially developed by Father Henri de Laulanié in Madagascar and later disseminated globally through the efforts of Prof. Norman Uphoff of Cornell University. Adoption of SRI has demonstrated significant potential for improving water-use efficiency, increasing yield, and promoting sustainable rice production.
