Abstract
Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) is a frontline extension institute at the district level for transfer of technology in the field of agriculture, horticulture, animal husbandry, fishery and allied fields, established by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, Govt. of India. First KVK was established in Pondicherry under the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) in 1974.only as a vocational training institute to cater to the needs of unemployed rural youths. Next year (2024) will be the Golden Jubilee of the establishment of the 1st KVK. During this fifty years’ journey, the mandates of KVKs have changed from merely a vocational training institute to a single window technology delivery system at the district level at present. Training of practicing farmers, rural youths and extension functionaries, On-farm Testing (OFT), Frontline Demonstration (FLD) and Seed and Planting Material production are the mandated activities of the KVKs.
Sasya Shyamala Krishi Vigyan Kendra has been established under the aegis of Ramakrishna Mission Vivekananda Educational and Research Institute (RKMVERI) in the year 2013. The name “Sasya Shyamala” has been coined by Revered Swami Atmapriyanandaji Maharaj. During the last 10 years the KVK has tried to reach to the farthest corner of the district, dealing with a number of technologies in the fields of agriculture, horticulture, animal husbandry, fishery and allied fields. A good many infrastructures and demonstration cum production units have been developed in the instructional farm of the KVK for effective delivery of service to the farming community of the district. A number of entrepreneurs have been developed. I shall try to give a panoramic view of the KVKs in general and the activities of the Sasya Shyamala KVK, RKMVERI in particular.
