Abstract

Cancer Uncovered: From Fear to Breakthroughs takes you through the story of how our understanding of cancer has changed over the years. What was once a word people were afraid to even say is now a disease we understand much better, thanks to science. In this talk, I’ll share some of the major discoveries that helped us figure out what cancer really is, how it starts, and how we can fight it. We’ll explore how scientists learned that changes in our DNA can lead to cancer, and how this knowledge led to new treatments and ways to find cancer early. I’ll also focus on a rare and hard-to-detect type called gallbladder cancer. My lab is working on a new kind of blood test—called a liquid biopsy—that can find signs of this cancer early, just by analyzing tiny bits of DNA in the blood. This new approach could help save lives by catching cancer before it spreads and becomes harder to treat.
